Dying, Death and Burials in Jewish Culture
Umírání, smrt a pohřbívánív židovské kultuře
Podle talmudu v nemoci a smrti nesmí být nikdo opuštěn. O všechny náboženské i praktickézáležitosti, související s umíráním, smrtí, pohřbem a pomocí pozůstalým, se starají členovépohřebního bratrstva (chevra kadiša). První chevra kadiša byla u nás založena v Praze v roce1564. Tradice rovněž určuje chování pozůstalých a přikazuje prokazování mimořádné úctyhrobům předků. Narozdíl od křesťanských zvyklostí mrtvým má být zaručena neporušitelnostjejich hrobů na věčné časy. Proto se u nás přes všechny nepříznivé dějinné události (pogromy,vyhnání, holocaust) po staletí až do dnešních dnů dochovalo mnoho městských i venkovskýchžidovských hřbitovů.

According to the Talmud nobody must be deserted in illness or death. All religious and practicalmatters connected with dying, death, burial and help to relatives are looked after by the burialfraternity (chevra kaddish). The first chevra kaddish in this country was founded in Prague in1564. Traditions govern also the behaviour of relatives and demand special reverence ofancestors’ graves. Contrary to Christian customs to the dead intactness of their graves for evermust be ensured. Therefore despite all adverse historical events (pogroms, exile, holocaust) forcenturies to the present time many Jewish cemetries, urban and rural, were preserved.
