Overview

Tracheal stenosis is a rare but serious condition of the respiratory tract. It is a narrowing of the airways leading to hypoventilation and impairment of mucociliary clearance. The aim of the treatment is to secure the clearness of the airway. Stenosis may develop as a result of malignant disorders or non-malignant conditions. The most frequent cause of the stenosis is prolonged endotracheal intubation and/or complications of tracheostomy. Treatment options include endoscopic endotracheal (dilatation, stents, laser-surgery) and open-surgery (resection and anastomosis end-to-end, tracheoplasty and transplantation in experiments).
