Diseases Caused by the Asbestos Dust
Nemoci způsobené prachem azbestu
Azbesty jsou vláknité křemičitany. Pro své technické vlastnosti byly hojně používány ve stavebnictví, v kovoprůmyslu i v jinýchodvětvích. Vdechování azbestových vlákem může způsobit plicní azbestózu, ztluštění pohrudnice, rakovinu plic a mezoteliom. Tatoonemocnění vznikají až za dlouhou dobu (řádově za několik desetiletí) po expozici azbestovým vláknům, proto se s nimi budemesetkávat i poté, kdy se azbest téměř přestane používat. Obavy z přítomnosti azbestových vláken v našem životním a pracovnímprostředí, které byly jedním z důvodů omezeného využívání materiálů obsahujících azbest, jsou někdy interpretovány takovýmzpůsobem, že se laická veřejnost azbestu bojí větší měrou, než tento škodlivý faktor zasluhuje.

Asbestos is a fibrotic silicate. Due to its technical properties, it was often used in building industry, metal industry and in otherfields. Inhalation of asbestos fibres may cause lung asbestosis, thickening of pleura, lung cancer and mesothelioma. These diseasesdevelop after a long time (several decades) after exposure to asbestos fibres, therefore we may diagnose them even after asbestoscease to be used. Worries concerning the presence of asbestos fibres in the general and working environment, which were one of thereasons of the limited use of materials containing asbestos, are sometimes interpreted in such a manner that people are afraid ofasbestos more than this adverse factor deserves.
